The new single Born Out of Sex by Berlin post punk performance duo Mad Kate | the Tide is independently is released today, the 1st of January 2020. Born Out Of Sex is the first single off their forthcoming EP, This Morning Waking, which is a body of work – music, lyrical prose, essay, video and performance — that revisits some of Mad Kate’s earliest writings on rape culture and non-concentual sex, dating back to 2001. Her texts, haunting melodies, and the unashamed presence of her explicit body in performance, exposes the dilemma of the body as inextracibly entangled inside powerful structures of entitlement, power, and empowered identities that are always and always were related to sex and the sexual body.
Mad Kate writes: “I was born out of sex, lived in the body, arrived through the cunt, to be told that I am a cunt, that I will be desired, that they will want to have sex in me and on my body, to guard against sex, to be a certain type of body, to do and not do certain things with my body.” Born Out of Sex is about the impossibility of leaving the physical markings of the body, the way that the body is read and the expectations placed on it. A physical body has lived there inside the uterus, did emerge from another body. The body has emerged from a process of sex, preganany, birthing, and parenting and it must always contest with the how it has been identified as such from the moment it emerges.
MAD KATE THE TIDE is a postpunk performance project by the performance artist Mad Kate and guitarist Jaco Bertacco. Using a multimedia, hyperlinked and textual approach to live and recorded musical performance, they explore the radical possibilities of touch, the performance of sexuality and gender, and the challenge of what it means to “be alive to” another person in this digital age. They have most recently performed their work “ALIVE:ness” at Maxim Gorki Theatre Studio R.
